Why this petition matters

Join us March 5, for the first action in support for the family of Erick Mejia and accountability for his murderers.
CALL TO ACTION! Justice for Erick Mejia! On January 27, 2021
,
Erick Mejia was brutally killed by San Antonio Police at South Park Mall. Erick was trying to get away from the Police as they chased him and shot him. Erick did have a gun on him, but that is NO death sentence. Video shows that he never pointed it at officers. “He didn’t want to go to jail.He didn’t want to be deported. What I feel like they should have done in that moment was to try and calm him down," she said. "Not just kill him like he was some stray dog or something. It hurts me that he got killed by someone that should be protecting me, and my family and everybody else” - Milexa Camargo, sister of Erick
This is the intersection of many vices of colonialism, border politics, and the police state. We have seen hardly, if any at all acknowledgement of Erick’s murder from local city officials, police or the media.

“Erick Dariel Varela Mejía was a heartfelt, bright individual navigating through life’s battles valiantly. He practically lived his whole life here in San Antonio, Texas where he stayed in closure with his loved ones. He was quite unique in his way of thinking, always in search of everlasting knowledge. His biggest desire was to be happy and share that with a family of his own one day. Like you may already know, he was found with a gun at South Park Mall struggling every second to put that gun down, to just listen, to surrender. Personally, that video killed me inside— I hated every part of it because I knew him very well. It was fear that opaqued, fear of ending up in jail or being deported. Moreover the approach of SAPD was not sympathetic— instead daunting and spine-chilling. We are seeking support from people like you that are learning more about who Erick was and this unjust tragedy.” -Milexa Camargo, sister of Erick

OUR DEMANDS:
1. Fire the San Antonio Police officers involved in Erick’s killing.
2. Allow Erick’s family to see his body/autopsy photos. Erick’s family was never once permitted to see his body after he was killed.
3. Return Erick’s belongings that he had in him the day that he was killed by SAPD. 4. Allow family to see FULL body cam video.
There are still some videos from the officers that the family haven’t been permitted to see yet. He had approximately 28 bullets fired at him. Erick was clearly having a mental health crisis and should NOT have been killed! His family begged to speak to him in person and were on the scene, but were told to stay back or else. Please support the family in their fight to spread awareness and hold the SAPD murderers accountable.

¡LLAMADA A LA ACCIÓN! ¡Justicia para Erick Mejía! El 27 de enero de 2021
,
